Taishō Overalls

A meeting of two histories.

A distressed denim overall dress has been reworked with a panel of authentic vintage Japanese kimono silk, transforming the front pocket into a miniature landscape.

Against a deep indigo ground, the silk carries an intricate composition of flowers, water and architectural forms in ivory, vermilion, ochre and muted green. Its imagery draws upon the landscape and seasonal motifs that have travelled through Japanese textile design for generations.

The piece takes its name from the Taishō era, 1912–1926, a brief but remarkable period in Japanese history when traditional aesthetics existed alongside an increasingly modern, international culture.

That same contrast sits at the heart of the garment: Japanese silk against faded denim, delicacy against utility, something once treasured given an entirely different life.

The original denim has deliberately been allowed to retain its fading, distressing and raw hem. These aren't flaws to be erased. They are part of the history of the garment, just as the vintage textile carries a history of its own.
