A quiet silhouette carrying a much older story.

The Sobokuna Dress begins with soft washed blue denim, shaped into an understated sundress with a gently gathered skirt, fitted bodice and shirred back. Set into either side of the bodice are panels of authentic vintage Japanese kimono silk, positioned almost like glimpses through an opening.

The silk features a classical Japanese narrative or scenic composition, with traditional architecture, figures, flowering branches and richly layered landscape details. Cream, vermilion, muted green and gold emerge from the darker ground, giving the textile the character of a tiny painted world.

Rather than allowing the silk to dominate the garment, it has been used sparingly. Two fragments of something ornate and historic interrupt the simplicity of the denim.

Sobokuna evokes something natural, unaffected and without unnecessary ornament. Here, the simplicity belongs to the dress itself, while the surviving kimono textile quietly preserves the complexity of another garment and another time.

The result is an easy, contemporary piece with history tucked into its seams.
