Shiro Jacket

A study in restraint, interrupted by fragments of another story.

The Shiro Jacket begins with clean white denim, deliberately kept almost untouched across the front. Two narrow panels of authentic vintage Japanese kimono textile have been set beneath the chest pockets, allowing flashes of intricate floral and pictorial pattern to emerge from an otherwise minimal silhouette.

Turn the jacket around and its character changes completely.

Across the back sits an illustrated Japanese landscape: a windswept sakura tree in bloom, its dark branches twisting across a pale moon above distant mountains and the silhouette of a pagoda. Soft blossom-pink breaks through the monochrome landscape, creating a striking counterpoint to the white denim.

In Japanese aesthetics, white can suggest purity, simplicity and beginnings, but here the emptiness also serves another purpose. It gives the surviving fragments of vintage textile room to breathe.

Rather than covering the garment in decoration, the kimono fabric appears only in glimpses. Something old is allowed to remain visible without being made to imitate what it once was.
