One-of-a-kind piece
Sayagata Jacket
Pattern without end. A story carried forward.
The Sayagata brings authentic vintage Japanese kimono silk into the long, sculpted silhouette of washed black denim.
Across the back, great pale blossoms emerge from a deep black ground, rendered almost entirely in shades of ivory, pearl and silver-grey. Look closer, however, and another pattern begins to reveal itself.
Worked through the floral forms is sayagata, a traditional Japanese geometric motif formed from interlocking lines that appear to continue without end.
Long used within Japanese textiles and decorative arts, sayagata carries associations with continuity, longevity and enduring good fortune. Here, its precise geometry sits beneath the softness of the flowers, creating pattern within pattern.
Large stylised peonies dominate the composition, traditionally celebrated as the king of flowers and associated with beauty, prosperity and good fortune. Buds, leaves and smaller blossoms weave between them, giving the monochrome textile remarkable depth.
Rather than cutting the silk into small decorative fragments, it has been preserved as a long uninterrupted panel running through the centre of the jacket.
Against washed black denim, centuries-old visual language takes on an entirely different character.
Floral and geometric.
Soft and severe.
Old and new.
A pattern intended to continue without end, carried forward in another form.
