Genji Jacket

An old story, carried into another life.

The Genji brings together washed black denim and an extraordinary panel of authentic vintage Japanese kimono silk.

Against its deep black ground, an elaborate courtly world unfolds in gold, crimson, ivory and soft botanical colour.

At its heart is the gosho-guruma, the elegant ox carriage once associated with Japan's Imperial court and aristocracy. Over centuries, the carriage became entwined with one of Japan's great literary works, The Tale of Genji, and appears throughout Japanese decorative art as an evocation of the refined world of the classical court.

Around it, peonies bloom beneath cascading wisteria. Pine, flowering branches, figures and fragments of landscape emerge amongst passages of gold, creating a textile that rewards being looked at slowly.

Set into the back of a dark biker-style denim jacket, that refinement meets something altogether less obedient.

The contrast is deliberate.

Court and street.
Silk and denim.
Tradition and rebellion.

The kimono is no longer worn in its original form, but its story has not disappeared.

It has simply acquired another chapter.
