Botan Jacket

The Botan brings together ivory denim and a panel of authentic vintage Japanese kimono fabric, allowing the original textile to become the centrepiece of an entirely new garment.

Across the back, great peony blossoms unfold amongst chrysanthemums and smaller seasonal flowers, their soft lavender, ivory, blue and flashes of vermilion emerging from a delicately shaded ground.

In Japanese decorative tradition, the peony, or botan (牡丹), has long been celebrated as the king of flowers. Luxuriant and spectacular in bloom, it became a symbol associated with beauty, prosperity, nobility and good fortune.

Around it, chrysanthemums bring their own traditional associations with longevity and renewal, creating a composition rich not simply in colour, but in meaning.

The kimono textile has been preserved as a generous uninterrupted panel rather than reduced to decoration, allowing its original composition and extraordinary detail to remain visible.

Set against simple ivory denim, the silk becomes almost painterly.
